STEM – Chemical Science

Term 2

Grade 5/6:

In term 2 students will be comparing the basic properties of a solid, liquid, and gases, looking at mass, volume, colour, texture, and temperature. We will investigate physical and chemical changes and describe how water undergoes different states through heating a cooling. We will identify materials that dissolve in water and speed up and slow down the process all through  laboratory experiments. Lastly, we will conduct an experiment investigating how solids can be separated.

Grade 3/4:

In term 2 we will be comparing the mass and volume of a solid with the appropriate tools to determine matter. We will measure the temperature and compare temperatures of various objects. In addition, as scientists we will describe the changes water undergoes. We will have a lab about magnets and what attracts and repels. Lastly, we will be able to identify physical and chemical changes.

Grade 1/2:

In term 2 students will be able to recognise objects by observable properties of matter based on their physical characteristics.  They will observe and measure objects in terms of their properties including size, temperature, and weight.  We will conduct an experiment using chocolate to observe the change in matter. We will be measuring temperature and comparing temperature.

Preps:

In term 2 we will be asking A LOT of questions about the natural word and sorting items into different groups based on size, texture, colour. We will use our five senses to make careful observations by observing a fruit (apple).  In addition, we will be using the engineering design process to design and build.
