Social, Emotional Learning
It is our vision…
At Pascoe Vale Primary School the students, staff, parents and the local community have the right to learn, teach, work and participate in an environment that is safe, respectful and supportive.
The Melbourne Declaration on Education Goals for Young Australians (2008) states: “Schools play a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and wellbeing of young Australians”.
SEL Program
At Pascoe Vale Primary School all students participate in a weekly session promoting aspects of social and emotional health. These are some of the areas that SEL covers throughout the year:-
SEL sub-committee
The School Council SEL Sub-Committee is established every year after the School Council Annual General Meeting. Our major focus is supporting the school’s SEL program and getting parent input and involvement. The SEL sub-committee is made up of parents and teachers and is always happy to welcome new members to contribute to their valuable work.
KidsMatter
KidsMatter Primary is a mental health and wellbeing framework for primary schools and is proven to make a positive difference to the lives of Australian children. KidsMatter Primary provides the proven methods, tools and support to help schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced kids. KidsMatter Primary significantly improved:
-the mental health and wellbeing of students
-the quality of school work
-the ability of parents, carers and teachers to help children deal with problems
-NAPLAN results – when a school implemented KidsMatter Primary well.
KidsMatter Primary was developed by the Australian Government Department of Health, Beyond Blue, the Australian Psychological Society, and the Principals Australia Institute. KidsMatter Primary aims to help:
CASEA
This program aims to improve access to mental health professionals throughout childhood development, to strengthen community understanding of challenging behaviours and emerging Conduct Disorder, to increase the skill level of schools to improve management of challenging behaviours, and ultimately, to ensure these young people get the support they need during a critical part of their lives. This program commences in term 3 for seven weeks for grade 1 students and then again in term 4 for grade 3 students.
RRRR- Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning program has been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health related outcomes and subjective wellbeing. It also reduces antisocial behaviours including engagement in gender-related violence.
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) learning materials cover eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning across all levels of primary and secondary education: Emotional Literacy; Personal Strengths; Positive Coping; Problem Solving; Stress Management; Help Seeking; Gender and Identity; and Positive Gender Relationships.
Better Buddies
The Better Buddies Program is an initiative designed to create friendly and caring school communities where bullying is reduced. This Framework is an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation which can be used to support our school buddy system. The Better Buddies lessons are for children in their first and last year of primary school. Each week the junior buddies partner up with their Grade six buddy to learn about caring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference, including others and responsibility. All children receive and interact with the mascot – Better Buddies’ purple bear.
